Ososo Carnival is a cultural event held annually to showcase the cultural heritage, traditions and tourism potentials of Ososo in Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo State.

The 2017 edition of the Carnival which has as its theme ‘’OSOSO CARNIVAL: A CATALYST FOR SUSTAINABLE TOURISM DEVELOPMENT’’ is a complete package of leisure events which includes street dance, parade of costumes, arena based performances, beauty pageant, musical funfairs, bonfire, cultural display, art and fashion exhibitions, visual creativity and sporting activities.

These events are reminiscent of the rich culture, vast tourism potentials, hospitality and peace-loving nature of the Ososo people.


The first edition of the Carnival was held from December 27 – 30, 2011. The immersive experience of participants and visitors during the maiden edition of the carnival was the motivating factor that propelled organizers to ensure that the celebrative event is held annually.


The idea to float the leisure event was contrived by a group of young and enterprising citizens of Ososo immediately after Season 8 of the Gulder Ultimate Search [a Nigerian Reality Television Series created and sponsored by Nigerian Breweries Plc] was hosted in Ososo in 2011.


Since the successful organization of the maiden edition, the Carnival has become one of the most anticipated major events that people in Ososo and neighbouring communities as well as those in the Diaspora look forward to annually.


Since the event was first organized in 2011, Ososo community has continued to witness the massive influx of indigenes in the Diaspora as well as other parts of Nigeria during the yuletide season.


This has given rise to an unprecedented growth and development in the community as more and more indigenes have taken the initiative to develop properties at home and set up small scale businesses. There is no denying the fact that the Carnival has sustainably boosted the commercial activities in Ososo and brought about a healthier local economy.


The Carnival has also imparted positively on the youth population of Ososo. Apart from being a mobilization platform for positive action, the Carnival has become a vehicle for talent discovery, mentorship and cultural reorientation.


In spite of the multiple gains recorded since the start of the Carnival, the organization of the event has been bedeviled by the lack of adequate corporate sponsorship and absence of Government funding; the dwindling commitment and interest of some of those who initiated the idea; and the non professional approach to the organization of the event. The negative impact of these challenges took a great toll on the quality of the content and organization of the Carnival in 2015 and 2016.


Arising from the above and the critical need to rejuvenate and scale-up the standard of the Carnival, a workshop/retreat with the theme ‘’Ososo Carnival: Time for A New Beginning’’ was organized in Benin City by stakeholders from May 26 – 27, 2017. In a communiqué issued at the end of the workshop/retreat, the stakeholders amongst others:


Expressed profound joy and gratitude with the current initiative to rejuvenate Ososo Carnival and transform it to a professionally organized event with national and global appeal;

Support the active and vigorous drive to engage the three tiers of government and the private sector in the sponsorship of the Carnival;

That following the proposal presented by Neo Media and Marketing Ltd, a Lagos based communications and marketing company should be granted the rights to source for sponsors of Ososo Carnival and be charged with the responsibility of promoting and managing the annual event forthwith.’’


In line with the spirit and letter of the communiqué under reference, and the strong desire to key into the vision of the Governor of Edo State, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki to effectively develop tourism potentials in Edo State, Ososo Carnival Initiative has entered into a partnership with Neo Media and Marketing Ltd to source for sponsors, promote and professionally manage Ososo Carnival for a period of 5 years in the first instance.


Similarly, in line with the new vision, Ososo Carnival Initiative has began the process of networking and engaging with organizers of major Carnivals around the world such as the  carnivals in Calabar [Nigeria] Rio de Janeiro [Brazil] Venice [Italy] Cologne [Germany] Quebec [Canada] London [UK] New Orleans [USA] and Nice [France]. The strategic engagement is designed to afford Ososo Carnival Initiative the opportunity to learn from the wealth of experience of these frontline carnivals and the capacity to elevate Ososo Carnival to a world class event.


The first step in this regard is the recent engagement and emerging relationship between Ososo Carnival Initiative and the Calabar Carnival Commission. It is heart-warming that the Chairman of the Calabar Carnival Commission, Mr. Gabe Onah attended and delivered the keynote address at the opening session of the 2nd Bi-Annual Stakeholders Meeting of Ososo Carnival Initiative held in Benin City on Saturday, September 23, 2017.


The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Kabiru Adjoto was the Special Guest of Honour while the Honourable Commissioner for Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs, Mr. Osaze Osemwegie-Ero chaired the occasion. Equally in attendance was Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje, member representing Akoko-Edo Constituency II and Chairman, Board of Trustees of Ososo Carnival Initiative and Mr. Ehi Braimah, Managing Director/CEO Neo Media and Marketing ltd.


The first major take home from the above mentioned event is that the Chairman, Calabar Carnival Commission is sending a technical/observer team to study and assist Ososo Carnival Initiative with the organization of Ososo Carnival 2017. The second is that Calabar Carnival will send a float to participate in Ososo Carnival 2018. These gestures are indicative of the consequential benefits of the strategic mutual cooperation between Ososo and Calabar Carnivals and the multiplier effect they will have on other festivals in Edo State.


Following the successful 2nd Bi-Annual Stakeholders Meeting, the immediate task confronting Ososo Carnival Initiative is to turn Ososo Carnival into a brand like, Calabar Carnival, through a strategic framework. In order to achieve this objective, it is imperative that we must engage and work hand in hand with the Edo State Government and other critical stakeholders.


Here in lies the significance of the emerging partnership between Ososo Carnival Initiative and Neo Media and Marketing Ltd on the one hand, and the exciting partnership between Ososo Carnival Initiative and the Cross River State Carnival Commission on the other hand.


More importantly, is the strong endorsement of Ososo Carnival by the Edo State Government.


As the build up to Ososo Carnival 2017 gathers momentum, it is imperative for all critical stakeholders: the Government, the private sector, the tourism community and indeed the Ososo nation to step up their levels of commitment and ensure that the event achieves its desired goal.
